Wayne Lobo and Hypax Lobo Rear Loaders

If not for a single page of ad copy saved by Dana Gregory, the Wayne Lobo rear loader might remain unknown today. It was announced sometime in the early 1980s, and features the same type of semi-curved body construction used by the Gruncher and Curbtender models of the day. The Lobo would appear to be a refinement of the E-Z Pack Super Hopper rear loader of the 1960s, with a single packing panel guided by an elliptical roller track. An ingenious linkage arrangement allowed the use of only two cylinders to operate the packer and raise the tailgate. Nothing else is known about this "Lone Wolf" of the Wayne rear loader line.

WAYNE HYPAX REAR LOADER

Eschewing the unorthodox engineering concepts of Gruncher and Lobo, Wayne Engineering continued their pursuit of a competitive "full size" rear loader with a far more conservative approach. While the Gruncher had been based on a successful but aging Norba design, their next attempt would be patterned after a popular and proven new Norba design, the Ki-11. This was a rugged slide-sweep packer, which was paired with a Wayne GT body to become the Hypax.

These were officially called GT Hypax when introduced around 1985, and were available in 16, 20 and 26-cubic yard capacities. The bodies were not of Norba pattern, but were simply larger versions of the ones used on the Wayne Royal GT. Although lacking the push-button controls of the Ki-11, the Hypax did share a power-locking tailgate with its Swedish relative. Container lifts could handle cans up to ten yards. By the 1990s, a split-body recycler was added for dual stream collection. Ultimately, the Hypax nevertheless failed to make Wayne a major contender in the full-size rear loader market. The next Wayne rear loader would come from the drawing board of the man who invented the Gar Wood LP-900.
