Automatic Loader Corporation
Brooklyn, New York

This 14-cubic yard enclosed refuse body was designed by Ernst Zeuthen in 1932, was probably too far ahead of its time. Using a hydraulically operated cable lift to raise and dump barrels (with a 15-second cycle time), it would almost be right at home on the streets of most American cities today. It lacked a compactor plate, and the body was raised for load consolidation and discharge. This is also significant in that is one of the few American designs to attempt dustless loading, which was becoming all the rage in European cities.

Most likely, this was built in an attempt to win a contract with the New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY). However, there is no evidence that the Department ever adopted it, at least in any great numbers, and the company evidently folded in harsh economy of the 1930s.
