Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI)
Houston, Texas
Mega-hauler Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) has mostly been a consumer of refuse trucks, rather than a producer. However, the firm did commission this unusual prototype front loader in 1977 on a CCC Centurion low-entry truck chassis. Designed to legally carry a 30,000 pound payload, it used aluminum components in the body for weight savings. Other objectives of the project were reduced fuel consumption, improved driver visibility, maneuverability and increased efficiency.
The BFI 'concept truck' was the idea of Allan H. Berger, then director of equipment services for BFI. The design was a joint effort between Crane Carrier Company (CCC), The Heil Company and Reynolds Aluminum. The concept vehicle was unveiled in May, 1977 at the NSWMA Convention at New Orleans, Louisiana. No production models are known to have been built.
