Hagie Manufacturing Company
Clarion, Iowa
Hagie is a pioneering manufacturer of self-propelled sprayers for agricultural use. In the early 1970s, a small refuse vehicle was developed for satellite collection. Originally called the Sani-Tarrier when it arrived around 1972, it featured a 53 HP engine and enclosed cab. The 3-cubic yard body was based on the "swinging gate" type hopper used to feed stationary compactor units, and boasted a 2-to-1 compaction ratio. Once filled, the truck was then backed-up to a rear loader, and tipped to discharge the load. The swinging packer assisted in unloading.
An improved version was announced the following year, re-named the Tidy-Bug II. It had a slightly different cab and packer, and side wings to minimize spillage during the transfer process. By 1976, Hagie had sold the rights to Heil, which marketed the truck for a few more years as the Colecto-Cub.
