Johnston P85 rear loader was based on the Ochsner KS-4

JD MacDonald Engineering was founded in 1951 as a manufacturer of refuse incinerators, but the company entered the equipment business in 1959 by importing the popular Johnston vacuum road sweeper line from England. By the early 1970s, rear-loading refuse bodies were added, based on the Austrian Ochsner KS-4 series and badged as Johnstons. The first front loaders joined the lineup in 1980, with equipment being branded as MacDonald Johnston Engineering (MJE). 1991 saw the introduction of the first side loader, a timely move with automated collection beginning to become popular on the continent. MJE paddle-packer bodies with automated arms were eventually offered as dual-stream recyclers as well.

A version of the American E-Z Pack C-series rear loader joined the family around the early 1980s and was sold as the MJE JP6. Not coincidentally, MJE front loaders used the E-Z Pack scissor-type lift arms on earlier models. Hook-lifts, skip loaders and stationary compactors have also been been offered through the equipment division. MJE was purchased by Bucher Industries (Switzerland) in 2005, and within two years was trading as MacDonald Johnston (without the "Engineering"). In 2014, the equipment division was officially rebranded as Bucher Municipal.
