Special Trucks Inc. (STI)
Fort Wayne, Indiana

Special Trucks Inc. (STI) began operations in 1977 as a custom fabricator of truck cabs, mainly stand-up and right-hand drive control modifications. The company also did front-wheel drive conversions for off-road duty trucks.

STI developed their own forward-control cab in 1980 called the Buzzard, which was initially conceived for use with side-load refuse bodies, but became popular for rear loaders as well. The galvanized steel cab was bolted to the front of an OEM truck chassis, typically an International S-Series or GMC J-Series. Trucks were ordered complete, to utilize the existing components such as wire harnesses and controls, The discarded factory cabs were then sold as replacements.

The Buzzard offered 18-inch ground clearance, good driver visibility and easy maintenance. When needed, STI also handled drop-frame modifications. STI typically ordered whole trucks themselves, although customers were welcome to buy their own and drive-in to Fort Wayne for the conversion. Numerous custom features were available at customer request. The company seems to have ceased operations sometime in the late 1990s.
