FAUN
Nuremberg, Germany
By Eric Voytko
The predecessor to today's FAUN was founded by Justus Christian Braun, who established a metal casting foundry at Nuremberg in 1845. Mobile fire-fighting sprayers were added by 1868, and the first refuse collectors and street cleaners in 1908. Following a takeover by Karl Schmidt in 1913, the firm was re-named Fahrzeugwerke Ansbach und Nurnberg, which formed the initails FAUN.
1927 saw the introduction of the famous Rolltrommel refuse collection truck, a fore & aft-type tipper mounted on a FAUN-built truck chassis. It featured a unique swinging baffle, which opened when the body was rolled forward, allowing refuse to pass from the loading hopper to the body, and then closed to prevent fallback into the hopper when the body was rolled back to the loading position.
The factory was completely destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt starting in 1944. Refuse truck production had resumed within two years, with the pre-war Rolltrommel on updated chassis. Eventually, more moderm compression bodies were offered using the Ochsner system, another pre-war design from Switzerland which remained popular into the 1960s. The purchase of the former Borgward factory brought consolidation of FAUN municipal vehicle activities to Osterholtz-Scharmbeck by 1973. All manner of public service truck equipment was produced here, with a shift towards FAUN refuse bodies installed on proprietary truck chassis, such as Mercedes-Benz and Magirus-Deutz.
